Registrar Spotlight

PictureSandra Smith
Sandra (Sandy) Smith of Limestone County.

Family/Community:  I am 80 years old – my birthday is October 26, 1945. Born and raised in Athens, Alabama, I graduated from West Limestone High School in Lester, Alabama, in May 1964. My parents are deceased, and I have one brother. I have been widowed since 2004, and have two daughters, Lisa Rose and Lori Green.  It is a blessing to have six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, with another great-grandchild expected in November 2026.  Community involvement includes active membership at First Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star #214 in Athens. I also serve as secretary of the homeowner’s association in the subdivision where I live.

When were you first appointed, and what do you like most about being a Registrar?  My first appointment to the Limestone County Board of Registrars was in September 2011, by State Auditor Samantha Gray. In 2017, I was appointed chairman upon Mr. Lee Liveoak’s departure from that position and have continued to serve as chairman to the present day.

What I enjoy most about being a Registrar is meeting new people who have moved into our county and encouraging them to register to vote. As a people person I truly enjoy my work and value the relationships I have built with my co-workers, county and city officials, state employees, and fellow registrars throughout the great state of Alabama.

What are your hobbies and interests?  My hobbies include attending my grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and watching them excel in the activities they enjoy. I also enjoy concerts, traveling, and participating in church activities. The beach and the mountains are two of my favorite vacation destinations.

What are you most proud of in your life?  I am most proud of being a Christian and strive to reflect my faith wherever I go. Second only to my faith, I am most proud of my two daughters, both of whom work in the medical field. Lisa works at Decatur General Hospital, and Lori works at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.  They selflessly provide care, compassion, dedication, and service to those in need. I am also very proud of all my grandchildren for pursuing their education, building successful careers, and becoming responsible, hardworking adults.
