Registrar Spotlight
Phillip Morris
Phillip Morris, Cleburne County
Family: I was born in Anniston, Alabama. I was raised in a working-class family where I was taught how to work and take care of myself from an early age. We moved around some, but Anniston was always home. I graduated from Anniston High School in 1968 and joined the U.S. Air Force spending almost 22 years, sixteen of those years as a recruiter before retiring in 1989 as a Senior Master Sergeant. I became a Christian at age 9 and that helped to shape me into what I am today. That was the best thing I ever did. The next best thing was marrying my high school sweetheart in 1970. We have two daughters, and we have six grandsons and two granddaughters. My wife is still working part time as the financial secretary at Parker Memorial Baptist in Anniston. I served as a full-time pastor after the Air Force in Montgomery and Heflin, retiring from full time service in December 2013. I have been serving bi-vocationally at Chulafinnee Baptist in Heflin since January 2014. The Air Force helped me believe in my ability to succeed in educational pursuits. I graduated from The Community College of the Air Force, Auburn University at Montgomery and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
When were you first appointed, and what do you like most about being a Registrar?
I was appointed by Governor Bentley in June 2016. I have been reappointed since then twice by Governor Ivey. We have lived in Cleburne County since moving here in 1995 to pastor Heflin Baptist Church. I get to see so many friends at the courthouse and catch up with what is going on with them and their families. I love serving my community and helping to ensure that our votes are counted and our voter rolls are accurate. We have a great BOR team in Cleburne County. We work well together to serve our voters and our county. Our freedom to vote is bought with the blood of patriots in our nation's history. We play a small role in protecting that freedom. It's an honor to be a small part of secure elections.
What are your hobbies and interests? My family and my church are a large part of who I am. I enjoy playing golf, following Auburn football, watching crime shows and working in my yard. We enjoy being with our grandchildren and travelling around to see them in sports, plays and their educational endeavors.
What are you most proud of in your life? I am proud of my Air Force service and becoming the first college graduate in my family. I am proud of my wife, my children and grandchildren. I am grateful for my faith in Christ and the change He has made in me. My service as a Registrar to my county and my state is a true blessing.
